About Us
The African Vibes FM web site has been established as a vehicle to
serve the Afro-Caribbean community in British Columbia, Canada. The web
site is the brain child of Victor Obosi, the producer/host
of the well-known African Vibes radio program.
Victor
Obosi
Victor is a native of Lagos, Nigeria where he obtained a B.Sc. in
Business Management from the University of Lagos. His hobbies are
cooking, reading and playing music and soccer.
Music:
As a youngster, Victor sat, watched and listened to his sister play her
records every weekend. He developed a passion for the music at an early
age. When his sister was out, he took the opportunity to play the
records on the stereo.
A family member, observing his interest and talent in music, gave him
his first opportunity at the age of 9, to DJ at a children's birthday
party. Having great success at this event, he was given the job of DJ
for many family functions. At the age of 19 his uncle introduced him to
Tony Brown, the owner of Club 21 - one of the big night clubs in Lagos.
It was good opportunity and learning experience to play in this arena.
He took advantage of this opportunity and honed his DJ skills.
Radio:
A series of coincidences brought Victor to radio broadcasting. First,
the radio DJ at Lagos Radio left, and the station manager asked if
Victor could stand in for the DJ. Some time later, Victor decided to go
to London to continue his studies. Every Saturday, he listened to Chris
Hill's World Music Program on BBC Radio 2. One day Victor phoned in to
make a request. Chris said he liked Victor's voice and accent and asked
him to come in to the studio to do voicing for a commercial. Victor
earned £50 which, was a bonus for a young struggling student. At times
Chris Hill would invite him as a guest on the program. When Chris Hill
decided to move to France, Victor replaced him at the BBC Radio 2.
After
2 years at the BBC Victor decided to move to Canada where he was
introduced to Stan Pierre of
CO-OP Radio.
Stan, is a very knowledgeable Caribbean man for whom Victor has great
respect. Victor was hired to do the weekly "African Roots and Rhythms"
show with three other hosts. Stan mentioned that
Fairchild Radio
was looking for someone to host an African show. Victor, met the
International program director, Seme Ho, at Fairchild. After reviewing
his qualifications and experience, the initial proposal for the program
was only one hour/weekly, but after two months, Fairchild Radio decided
they liked the program and increased it to two hours and now we are
testing out a new Market, Toronto!!!!!
